Marion Norbert-Riberolle emerged victorious after a late-race stumble by Sanne Cant cost the latter a potential win. Cant, visibly frustrated, was speedy to defend her performance when questioned about her second-place finish.
“Why would I be disappointed?” she retorted to Sporza, her voice laced with irritation. “I took a hard fall and am blessed to have even crossed the finish line.”
Cant’s crash, which occurred near a treacherous section with deep ruts, left her with a painful thigh injury.
“my handlebars struck my leg when I fell,” she explained, visibly wincing. “I had to finish the race with one leg, and the pain is intense. I’m worried about the extent of the damage.”
Cant was seen applying an ice pack to her injured leg,but it was quickly removed.
An Unexpected Victory for Norbert-Riberolle
Norbert-Riberolle, who hadn’t initially planned to compete in Loenhout, expressed his delight at the unexpected victory.
“I’m thrilled,” he shared. “My trainer and team convinced me to participate during our training camp, and I’m glad they did.”

“My legs felt heavy, and I was still a bit drowsy,” he admitted. “But I took my chance and it paid off.”

I myself, have been in her shoes countless times. It’s the adrenaline and the disappointment combining.
But let’s move on from the fall. Norbert-Riberolle mentioned he hadn’t planned to participate initially. This raises an interesting point – does strategic absence sometimes play a factor in cyclocross, allowing riders to capitalize on the absence of strong competition?
Sven: It’s a valid question. We saw that with the dutch riders missing from Loenhout. The absence of top-tier competition undeniably opens up opportunities. Norbert-Riberolle obviously seized the prospect. That’s the beauty of cyclocross,it’s about using every strategical advantage you can.

Sven: Cyclocross is a mentally demanding sport. You need to be resilient, adaptable, and able to bounce back from setbacks. It’s about staying focused in the moment, making speedy decisions, and pushing through pain and fatigue.
Norbert-Riberolle admits himself, he felt sluggish early on. How crucial do you think race-day readiness and preparation are for success?
Sven: Absolutely crucial. Cyclocross is about more than just physical fitness; it’s about mental readiness and race strategy. Every detail counts. From proper nutrition and rest to course recon and bike setup – preparation is paramount.
