Mikloško: choosing Life’s Pitch Over Chemotherapy
Czech football legend Luděk Mikloško, renowned for his time as West Ham’s goalkeeper, is facing a formidable opponent: cancer. Diagnosed three years ago, the 63-year-old has made a courageous decision to forgo chemotherapy, prioritizing a fulfilling life over aggressive treatment.
Currently serving as Baník ostrava’s sports director, Mikloško remains deeply involved in the sport he loves. “I’m still actively engaged, connecting with players and fans.I’m keeping busy,” he shared in a recent interview on West Ham’s website. As a guest at West Ham’s match against Liverpool, Mikloško emphasized his desire to remain active and immersed in the world of football. His journey began three years ago with the discovery of a hip lump, which was successfully removed. Though, a subsequent tumor emerged in his stomach. While radiotherapy initially proved effective, the emergence of new tumors necessitated chemotherapy.
Mikloško, however, made a conscious choice to decline this treatment path. “I want to live a normal life,” he explained. The prospect of six months of debilitating side effects, preventing him from working, traveling, and engaging with his colleagues, was unacceptable.
Supported by loved ones and driven by his passion for football, Mikloško finds solace and purpose in his work. “I have a strong support system, my job, and football – it’s my lifeblood,” he stated.
Mikloško’s illustrious career includes 42 appearances for the Czechoslovak and Czech national teams. He left an indelible mark on English football, playing 318 games for West Ham, earning the club’s Player of the Season award in 1991, and adding another 57 appearances for Queens Park Rangers. His remarkable 142 clean sheets place him sixth on the prestigious list of goalkeepers with at least 100 clean sheets in top-tier leagues.
His story is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of prioritizing quality of life in the face of adversity.
