Teh TV Refrath badminton team is gearing up for a challenging start to the second half of the season with two away matches this weekend.
On Saturday at 1 p.m., they face the 1.BV Mülheim 2,followed by a Sunday clash against SC Union 08 Lüdinghausen 2 at 11 a.m. The team is aiming for redemption against Lüdinghausen after a narrow home defeat in the first half of the season, while they secured a decisive victory against Mülheim.
Boasting five medalists from the West German Championships, the team is brimming with confidence. The women’s doubles pair of Selin Hübsch and Eva Janssens, who were unable to secure points together in the first half, are determined to make a strong showing this time around.
These away matches mark the beginning of a demanding stretch for TV Refrath, who will only play three of their remaining eight games at home.
The first challenge comes against the seventh-placed 1.BV Mülheim on Saturday at 5 p.m., followed by a tougher encounter against the second-placed 1.BC Wipperfeld on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
While TV Refrath are favorites in the Saturday derby, they will be underdogs against Wipperfeld. Securing victories in both matches is crucial for their pursuit of a coveted top-four finish.
Adding to the team’s strength is the return of veteran player Max Schwenger, who missed the entire first half due to injury. He will partner with Fabian Roth in the second men’s doubles. Julia Meyer will be absent for both matches as she competes in a tournament in Estonia. Florentine Schöffski, a singles specialist, will step in to fill the void in the doubles lineup.
Refrath Ready for Road Warrior Mentality: An Interview wiht Badminton Legend, Peter Hoes
TV Refrath badminton is facing a pivotal point in their season. With two tough away matches this weekend and a majority of their remaining schedule also on the road, they’re going to have to dig deep to achieve their target of a top-four finish. To get some insight into this challenge, we sat down with badminton legend, Olympian, and former national champion, Peter Hoes.
Moderator: Peter, thanks for joining us today. Refrath hasn’t had the easiest start to the season, and they now face a heavy road schedule. How crucial are these next two matches against Mülheim and Lüdinghausen?
Peter Hoes: These matches are absolutely crucial for Refrath. Starting with two wins away from home would build tremendous momentum. They need to make a statement, especially against Lüdinghausen, after that close loss earlier in the season. Remember, momentum in badminton can be a powerful thing.
Moderator: Refrath boasts some serious talent, including five medalists from the West German Championships. Do you think this depth will be a deciding factor in their upcoming match-ups?
Peter Hoes:
Absolutely. Depth is vital in team sports. Having world-class players like Selin Hübsch and Eva Janssens in the women’s doubles, who are itching to prove themselves,is a huge asset. And let’s not forget the return of veteran Max Schwenger from injury. His experience will be invaluable against tough opponents like Wipperfeld.
Moderator: Speaking of wipperfeld, they’re sitting pretty in second place and a formidable opponent. Refrath will be underdogs in that encounter. How do you think they should approach that challenge?
Peter Hoes:
Being the underdog can be a blessing in disguise. It takes the pressure off and allows them to play more freely. Refrath needs to focus on their game plan, exploit any weaknesses they see in Wipperfeld, and play with confidence. they have the talent to pull off an upset.
Moderator: Lastly, what advice would you give the Refrath team as they head into this demanding stretch?
Peter Hoes:
Frist and foremost, stay positive and believe in yourselves. You have the talent and the depth to compete with the best.Don’t get discouraged by being on the road. Embrace the challenge, support each other, and fight for every point. Remember, badminton is as much about mental strength as it is indeed about physical prowess.
