Chía’s Badminton Bonanza: An Exclusive Interview with Coach Pedro David Sánchez
Chía’s badminton program has been making waves recently, and for good reason. the team’s stellar performance at the National Festival of festivals, bringing home a staggering 13 medals, has cemented their place as a powerhouse in the sport.Today, we have the privilege of chatting with the mastermind behind this success story, Coach Pedro David Sánchez. Coach Sánchez, welcome!
Welcome, Coach! What a remarkable achievement for your team at the national Festival.
Thank you! I’m incredibly proud of the dedication and hard work every single athlete on the team has put in. We’ve built a strong program in Chía, and these results are a testament to the athletes’ commitment, the support of their families, and the incredible work of our coaching staff.
Let’s talk about the Under-9 division. Dominating with three gold medals is no easy feat. What makes this age group so especially strong?
This group is truly special. They have a raw talent and enthusiasm that’s infectious. Sofia Sierra and antonia Salgado are a formidable doubles pairing, and they’ve trained incredibly hard to achieve that level of synergy on the court. Seeing Sofia also take the girl’s singles title and Jerónimo Sánchez win the boy’s singles just goes to show the depth of talent we have coming up. Clearly, we have the potential to nurture world-class badminton players in this group.
Looking beyond the Under-9s, Chía’s athletes saw success across various age categories. What do you attribute to this widespread dominance?
We pride ourselves on a holistic approach to badminton progress. We don’t just focus on technical skills; we emphasize mental toughness, strategic thinking, and a strong team spirit. All these elements contribute to well-rounded athletes who can perform at their best in any age group.
I’d also say the team’s camaraderie is a major factor. They encourage and support each other, creating a positive and motivating training environment.
The mixed doubles gold medal win by Ximena Romero and Pedro Alvarez from another team is particularly noteworthy. How important is collaboration with other programs to the success of individual athletes?
I’m a firm believer in the power of collaboration. We don’t operate in a vacuum. Encouraging our athletes to train with players from other programs provides them with valuable exposure to different playing styles and pushes them to elevate their game. It’s also essential for the overall growth of badminton in the region.
For those young athletes aspiring to follow in the footsteps of the Chía team, what advice would you offer?
My biggest advice would be to never stop learning and pushing themselves. Badminton is a demanding sport, but the rewards are worth it. It’s important to have fun, enjoy the process, and never give up on their dreams.
It’s clear that Chía’s badminton program has a bright future. What are your goals for the team moving forward?
Our immediate goal is to give the athletes a well-deserved break, allowing them to recharge before we resume training. Looking ahead, we aim to build on this momentum, continue to develop these talented athletes, and compete at the highest level, both nationally and internationally. We’re determined to make Chía a true badminton hub.
We wish Coach Sánchez and the incredible Chía badminton team all the best in their future endeavors!
