fueled by this taste of success, the Tigers made strategic moves during the offseason, bolstering their roster with key acquisitions. Second baseman Gleyber Torres, formerly of the New York Yankees, and pitcher Alex Cobb, who previously played for the Cleveland Guardians, joined the team, adding depth and experience.
Leading the charge for the Tigers is their ace, Tarik Skubal. The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, Skubal recently agreed to a one-year, $10.15 million contract, avoiding arbitration and solidifying his presence in detroit through the 2025 season.

Jim, thanks for taking the time to chat.
Jim: My pleasure. Always happy to talk baseball.
The Detroit Tigers are making noise again, Jim. They stormed back into the playoffs in 2024 after a long drought. What do you attribute this resurgence to?
Jim: You know, they’ve got some young talent starting to blossom, but let’s be honest, it all starts with pitching. That Skubal kid, he’s the real deal! A true ace in every sense of the word.
Absolutely. Skubal’s 2024 performance was phenomenal. He lead the league in ERA, wins, strikeouts, the whole nine yards. What impresses you most about his game?
jim: The kid’s got ice water in his veins. He doesn’t back down from anyone, and he’s got a repertoire that would make Sandy Koufax proud. Plus, the way he carries himself, the composure, you can’t teach that.
We can’t forget about the acquisitions, either. Gleyber Torres and Alex Cobb are proven veterans who add depth and experience to this young team. What impact do you think they’ll have in 2025?
Jim: Torres brings pop and consistency to that lineup. A switch hitter who can rake, that’s valuable. Cobb,he’s a workhorse,a true professional. Those two are going to be great mentors for the younger guys.Remember, winning teams are built on a mix of experience and youthful exuberance.
The Tigers are in a tough division, though. the Central is always a dogfight. Can they compete for the crown in 2025?
jim: listen, the playoffs are like a whole new season. But I like the direction these Tigers are heading. They’ve got the pitching, they’ve got some youngsters ready to make their mark. If they can stay healthy and gel as a team, they have the potential to surprise a lot of folks.
Do you think Skubal might be eyeing a long-term future in Detroit?
Jim: You know, that’s a good question. He put up some serious numbers in 2024. after that Cy Young, he’s certainly earned his keep. It’s all about what the team and Skubal decide is best moving forward.
Great points, Jim.
