From Liepāja to Cyprus and⁣ Beyond: A Chat wiht Latvian Football Legend Valerijs⁤ Karašausks

Welcome back to The Sporting Edge, where‍ we delve deep into⁢ the⁣ careers of some of football’s most intriguing figures.Today, we⁤ have a special guest, the Latvian football journeyman, Valerijs Karašausks.

Valerijs, welcome to the show! Your career is a testament to adaptability and ⁣a genuine love for the ⁢beautiful game, spanning countries like Latvia, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Switzerland, and ⁢Kazakhstan. What drives this constant pursuit of new challenges?

Valerijs:⁤ “Thank you for having me. I think it’s the thrill of the unknown, the opportunity ⁣to experience diffrent football cultures, languages, and playing‌ styles. Each ⁤move presents‌ a chance to learn, grow, and ‍test my⁣ abilities in a new environment. It’s never been about chasing fame or fortune,⁢ but the pure joy of playing football.”

It’s certainly been a nomadic career! ⁢Your most‍ recent stints have seen you back in familiar territory with Liepāja.‌ After two prosperous seasons in the Cypriot second‌ division, what drew you back to Latvia?

Valerijs: “Liepāja is home. It’s where my football ⁤journey began, and the club holds a special place in ‍my heart. After my time in Cyprus, ⁣I felt the pull to‍ return, to contribute to the‌ club ⁢again. It’s ‌always refreshing to play in front of‍ familiar faces and be part of ⁢a ⁢community that believes in you.”

While your stint in⁣ Cyprus saw you playing in the second division, you ‍managed to bag an impressive six goals and an assist⁣ in just 14 matches. How did you find the transition from the Latvian Superleague to‍ the Cypriot second division?

Valerijs: “honestly, the competition was fierce, maybe even more ‍physical⁣ than I expected. But the‌ experience⁢ taught me a lot about adaptability. Cypriot football has a ⁤distinct style, with a focus on quick passing and technical dribbling.‌ I had to adjust my game, be more clinical in front ‍of goal, and learn to capitalize on every opportunity.”

Now, ⁣back in Latvia,‍ you’ve been a dependable⁢ presence for liepāja, but your goal-scoring rate hasn’t been as ‍prolific as it was in Cyprus. ⁤What would you say are ⁣the key differences between the ⁣two leagues?

Valerijs: “That’s a good observation. The Latvian Superleague is⁤ definitely more tactical, with teams often prioritizing defensive solidity over open attacking play. As ‍a veteran player, I’ve had ‌to adapt to a different role, focus ⁣on creating opportunities for my teammates, and ⁤leading by example on the pitch.”

What advice would you give to young,‌ aspiring⁤ footballers dreaming of playing ⁢abroad, especially in less-conventional footballing nations‍ like ‌Cyprus?

Valerijs: “Don’t ‍be afraid to ⁣step out of⁣ your comfort zone.⁢ ⁢Embrace the unknown, learn ⁢the‍ language as much as possible, ‌and immerse yourself in the local culture. It won’t be easy,⁤ but the rewards of experiencing‌ different cultures and playing styles are invaluable.”
