Beyond the Screen: Building Well-Rounded Youth Through Sports and Arts
Welcome back, sports enthusiasts! Today, we’re delving into an inspiring initiative spearheaded by the Yanahuara Municipality in Peru – their 2025 Summer Workshops. These workshops aim too equip children with a diverse set of skills, encompassing sports, education, and recreation. To shed light on the importance of such programs, we’ve invited a true sporting icon, Olympic medalist and retired gymnast, Nadia Comăneci. Welcome,Nadia!
Nadia: Thank you for having me. it’s a pleasure to discuss such a vital topic.
Moderator: Nadia, the Yanahuara workshops offer a range of activities, from traditional sports like soccer and volleyball to less conventional options like martial arts and chess. What are your thoughts on this diverse approach?
Nadia: I think it’s absolutely fantastic. When I was growing up,my training was extremely focused, and while it brought me tremendous success,I sometimes wished I had explored other interests. Providing children with diverse options allows them to discover hidden talents, develop well-rounded personalities, and understand the value of discipline and teamwork in different settings.
Moderator: Absolutely! It’s about nurturing the whole child, not just their athletic abilities. The mayor emphasizes the importance of drawing children away from screens and into physical activities. Do you see technology as a threat to youth participation in sports and other extracurriculars?
Nadia: Technology is undeniably a powerful force, and it’s not inherently bad. Though, excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s physical and mental well-being.
I believe a balance is crucial. While technology can be a valuable tool for learning and socializing, it shouldn’t replace real-world experiences, especially when it comes to physical activity and face-to-face interactions.

Well said,Nadia. The workshops aim to bring about a sense of unity between parents and children, encouraging shared activities. How crucial is parental involvement in a child’s development, especially in the realm of sports?
Nadia:
Parental support is indispensable. Children thrive when their parents are actively involved in their pursuits, whether it’s cheering them on from the sidelines, helping them practice, or simply showing genuine interest in their chosen activity. It fosters a sense of belonging, encourages perseverance, and strengthens the parent-child bond.
Moderator:
I couldn’t agree more. it’s about creating shared memories and experiences. These workshops are a beacon of hope for a generation increasingly glued to screens. They provide a platform for children to explore their potential, build confidence, learn valuable life skills, and forge lasting friendships.
What message would you like to leave our readers with, Nadia?
Nadia:
I urge parents to encourage their children to participate in activities beyond the digital world. Let them discover the joy of movement, the thrill of competition, and the satisfaction of achieving a goal through hard work and dedication. Let’s empower our youth to become well-rounded individuals who are not only physically fit but also mentally strong, creatively engaged, and socially responsible.
