Shin Hiejima: It’s my pleasure to be here. Always happy to talk about the game.
Moderator: Your career is truly inspiring. From representing Japan for 12 years to facing challenges head-on, your journey mirrors the rise of Japanese basketball itself. Let’s dive right in. The 2019 FIBA World Cup in Dongguan – you’ve mentioned feeling disillusioned afterward. Can you elaborate on what made that experience so tough?
Shin Hiejima: It wasn’t just the lack of fanfare, though that certainly played a role. I went into the tournament with high hopes, ready to contribute considerably to the team.But for various reasons, things didn’t click for me personally. I struggled to find my rhythm, and that feeling of not being able to perform at my best on the international stage was incredibly disheartening.
Moderator: It takes a lot of courage to step away from a agreeable situation and pursue new challenges. Your decision to leave Aisin Seahorse Mikawa for Tochigi Brex with the aim of going overseas, that was a bold move. what fueled your desire to venture outside Japan?
Shin Hiejima: I felt I needed a change, a fresh start. The Japanese league is fantastic, but I craved testing myself against different playing styles, pushing my limits even further. Overseas opportunities were always at the back of my mind, and when the chance with Brisbane Bullets arose, it felt like the right time to take a leap of faith.
Moderator: Unfortunately, your time in Australia proved to be testing, with limited playing time. Looking back, what do you believe were the primary contributing factors to this?
Shin Hiejima: Honestly, navigating a new league, a new team culture, was more challenging than I anticipated. Adapting to the style of play, building chemistry with new teammates – it takes time. My preferred playing style perhaps didn’t quite align with the team’s needs at the time, and I didn’t get enough opportunities to prove myself.
Moderator: Yet,you found a silver lining in those months,connecting with Keisuke Honda. How did those encounters impact you?
Shin Hiejima: Keisuke is an inspiration. He’s achieved so much in his career, and his perspective on navigating the ups and downs of professional sports was invaluable. He emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself, of remaining focused on the bigger picture, even when facing setbacks. His words resonated deeply with me during a tough period.
Moderator: You mention Keisuke’s emphasis on the “bigger picture.” What would you say is the biggest takeaway from your entire basketball journey, both the highs and the lows?
Shin Hiejima: Perseverance. Never giving up on your dreams, even when faced with adversity. Basketball has taught me about resilience, about adaptation, about the power of pushing beyond your comfort zone. Ther were moments of doubt, moments of frustration, but the love for the game, the desire to grow as a player and as a person, always kept me going.

Shin Hiejima: Trust the process. It won’t always be smooth sailing, there will be unexpected hurdles, but every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow.
