He presented a strategic plan to the federation, focusing on Carolina and other promising players. This collaborative approach yielded exceptional results, including Carolina’s gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, three World Championships, and six European Championships. Fernando Rivas corral: It’s been a long and rewarding journey. When I started, Spanish badminton was largely overlooked on the international stage. We lacked medals, recognition, and a clear pathway to success. My vision was always to elevate the game, and that started with a comprehensive strategic plan. Focusing on talent identification, individualized training programs, and a strong emphasis on team dynamics was key.
The pivotal moment you mentioned with Carolina was indeed groundbreaking. Recognizing her raw talent and potential,I brought her to the High-Performance Centre in Madrid to train with the best resources and expertise. It was a gamble, but one that paid off tremendously.
Many admire your holistic approach to coaching. Can you elaborate on how you integrate diverse training methods from various disciplines?
Fernando Rivas corral: badminton is a sport that demands a complete athletic skillset: agility, strength, precision, and mental fortitude. To cultivate these attributes, we can’t be confined by conventional methods. I draw inspiration from various disciplines – physiotherapy, nutrition, sports psychology – to create a personalized program for each athlete.
It’s about understanding their individual strengths and weaknesses, targeting specific areas for enhancement, and fostering a holistic growth process both on and off the court.
