Conquering New Heights: Slovakian Adventurer Lenka Poláčková Summits Antarctica’s Highest Peak
Lenka Poláčková, the Slovakian television personality known for her incredible mountaineering feats, has achieved yet another remarkable milestone. After conquering Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen in May 2022,a feat only previously accomplished by one othre Slovakian woman,Lucia Janičová (who used supplemental oxygen),Poláčková has set her sights on even more challenging summits. Her latest triumph? Scaling the highest peak in Antarctica, Mount Vinson.
“We skied down the highest mountain in Antarctica!” Poláčková announced to her followers. “on January 8, 2025, at 5:30 PM CLST, we reached the summit of Mount Vinson at 4,892 meters and then skied down a rarely used route called ‘Santi manti fanti’.”
This accomplishment is especially noteworthy due to the challenging conditions typically found on Mount Vinson.
“We were incredibly blessed to experience calm, windless weather at the summit and perfect snow conditions – a combination that occurs only a handful of times every few years,” she explained.”we are now comfortably settled at Union Glacier, thrilled to share this unique experience with you.”
Poláčková’s journey to the top of Mount Everest was a grueling test of endurance, as she recounted in a previous post: “Believe me, it was long and painful. But that’s how it is. To the core. We are still processing everything we experienced and felt. I vividly remember repeating to myself during the last 200 meters of ascent: ‘Never again…’ But when we met in Kathmandu, Peťo Hámor just laughed and said: ‘You’ve only been down for a short time. give it a month…’ ”
Clearly, Poláčková’s passion for mountaineering knows no bounds. Her latest success on Mount Vinson solidifies her position as a true adventurer and an inspiration to aspiring climbers worldwide.
Scaling New Heights: A Conversation with Mountaineering Legend Ed Viesturs
Lenka Poláčková, the Slovakian adventurer who just scaled Antarctica’s highest peak, Mount Vinson, has captured the inventiveness of the climbing world. To discuss this incredible feat and the unique challenges of mountaineering, we’re joined by none other than Ed Viesturs, the first American to summit all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks without supplemental oxygen.
Moderator: Ed, welcome to the show! Lenka’s ascent of Mount Vinson is truly remarkable. What are your initial thoughts on her accomplishment?
Ed Viesturs: It’s a fantastic achievement.Vinson is a seriously demanding mountain, even by mountaineering standards. The conditions can be brutally harsh, and the remoteness adds another layer of complexity. To climb it without supplemental oxygen, especially with a rare, unpredictable descent route, speaks volumes about Lenka’s skill, determination, and courage.
Moderator: She mentioned experiencing “calm, windless weather and perfect snow conditions.” How critical are those elements for a successful summit on a peak like Vinson?
Ed Viesturs: Absolutely crucial. vinson is notorious for its extreme winds and unpredictable weather patterns.
Those conditions can ground expeditions for days, even weeks. Having a window of calm weather is like winning the lottery – it’s what allows climbers to push for the summit.
Moderator: Lenka’s Everest climb without supplemental oxygen in 2022 is quiet extraordinary as well. What does it take mentally and physically to train for such an expedition?
Ed Viesturs: It’s a monumental undertaking. It requires years of dedicated training, building both physical endurance and acclimatization to high altitude. But the mental aspect is equally vital. You need immense focus, discipline, and the ability to overcome overwhelming fatigue and doubt.
Moderator: You’ve achieved something truly remarkable yourself, summiting all 14 8,000-meter peaks without supplemental oxygen. What keeps you motivated to climb even at this stage in your career?
Ed Viesturs: Mountaineering is more than just conquering peaks. It’s about pushing your limits, experiencing the raw beauty of nature, and expanding your understanding of yourself.Even after all these years, the mountains still hold a magnetic pull for me.
Moderator: Do you see a growing trend of women pushing boundaries in mountaineering, as exemplified by Lenka’s achievements?
Ed Viesturs: Absolutely. Women are increasingly taking on the most challenging climbs in the world, and they’re excelling. They’re proving that physical and mental strength know no gender.
It’s inspiring to see this shift in the sport.
Moderator: That’s fantastic to hear. Ed, thank you so much for sharing your insights with us. We wish Lenka all the best in her future endeavors, and we’re excited to see what she accomplishes next.
