The fifth stage of the Dakar Rally saw dramatic twists and turns across all categories, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. Covering a grueling 428 kilometers, the stage tested both drivers and machines, resulting in unexpected victories and meaningful shifts in the overall standings.
Car Class: Penalty Shakes Up the Podium
Nasser Al-Attiyah initially dominated the car class, finishing ten minutes ahead of Seth Quintero. However, a ten-minute penalty for completing the stage without a spare wheel shattered his hopes of victory. This unexpected turn of events propelled Quintero to the top spot, with al-Attiyah trailing by a mere second and Matias Ekstrom securing third place, just eight seconds behind.
Lithuanian Rokas Baciuska faced a challenging stage, losing 43 minutes, while Benediktas Vanagas battled technical difficulties on the track.
Hank Lategan continues to lead the overall standings, extending his advantage over Yazid al-Raji to ten minutes. Ekstrom holds onto third place, while Al-Attiyah climbed to fourth, 35 minutes behind the leader. Estonian Urvo Mānam dropped to 12th place, while Baciuska improved his position from 24th to 19th.
truck class: Macik Takes Charge Amidst Mechanical Woes
martin Macik delivered a commanding performance in the truck class, leaving his closest competitor nearly 19 minutes behind.Sadly, technical issues plagued the crews of Vaidota Žala and Aleš Loprais, casting doubt on their ability to reach the finish line. Loprais, the overall leader, suffered a significant setback, losing an hour and a half, allowing Macik to seize the lead.Macik now enjoys a comfortable two-hour advantage over Mitchell van den Brink, with Loprais dropping to third.
Motorcycle Class: Benavides Triumphs, Sanders Maintains Overall Lead
Luciano Benavides emerged victorious in the motorcycle class, while overall leader Daniel Sanders finished in 12th place. Despite this setback, Sanders retains his lead in the overall standings, holding a seven-minute advantage over Toš Šarein.

Dakar Drama: A Chat with Off-Road Legend, Cyril Despres
The Dakar Rally continues to deliver heart-stopping action, with stage 5 throwing unexpected curveballs at the competitors. To unpack the latest twists adn turns,I sat down with five-time Dakar Rally champion and off-road legend,Cyril Despres.
Mark: Cyril,Stage 5 was a real rollercoaster! Nasser Al-Attiyah seemed to have the car class in the bag until that ten-minute penalty. A spare wheel oversight, can you believe it?
Cyril: It’s incredible, isn’t it? These are the little details that can make or break a Dakar stage. Al-Attiyah is a world-class driver, but even the best can fall victim to a simple oversight under the immense pressure of the race. It’s a harsh reminder that the dakar is as much about mental fortitude as it is about raw skill.
mark: Seth Quintero capitalized on Al-Attiyah’s misfortune, snatching the stage win. A surprise victory, wouldn’t you say?
Cyril: Absolutely! Quintero has been quietly building momentum, and this win is a real boost for his confidence. He’s evolving into a serious contender, and it will be fascinating to see if he can maintain this form. It’s great to see new faces challenging the established order.
Mark: Speaking of established order, Macik completely dominated the truck class. loprais, the overall leader, faced major mechanical issues. Do you think Loprais can claw his way back from such a significant setback?
Cyril: It’s going to be a tough climb for loprais.
Losing an hour and a half in the Dakar is a massive blow. But remember, the Dakar is a marathon, not a sprint. Macik now holds a commanding led, but Loprais is a seasoned campaigner and won’t give up without a fight. He’ll need some luck and flawless execution in the coming stages to turn things around.
Mark:
The motorcycle class saw Luciano Benavides claim the stage win, while Sanders maintains his overall lead despite a lower finish today. What are your thoughts on Sanders’ consistency so far?
Cyril: Sanders is a machine! He’s been consistently strong throughout the rally. It’s notable how he manages to maintain composure and deliver solid results day after day. He’s definately one to watch for the overall victory.
Mark:
We’ve had some incredible upsets and dramatic shifts in the standings. As we head into the rest day, what are your predictions for the rest of the Dakar?
Cyril: I think we’re only just scratching the surface of the drama. This Dakar has been unpredictable from the start, and I don’t expect that to change. The rest day provides a chance for teams to regroup and strategize, but the pressure will intensify as we approach the finish line.Buckle up, because the best is yet to come!
What are your predictions for the remaining stages? Do you think Al-attiyah can recover from his penalty? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
