Nishikori Battles Back for First Round Victory at the Australian Open
The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, kicks off in Melbourne on January 12th. Former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori marked his return to the tournament with a hard-fought victory in the opening round of the men’s singles.
Nishikori, currently ranked 74th, faced a tough challenge from Thiago Monteiro, the 106th ranked Brazilian who advanced through qualifying. Monteiro took the first two sets, 6-4 and 7-6, putting Nishikori on the back foot. Though, the veteran Japanese player rallied, winning the next two sets 7-5 and 6-2 to level the match. In a thrilling final set, Nishikori ultimately prevailed 6-3, securing a hard-earned victory after a grueling four hours and six minutes.
This marks Nishikori’s first appearance at the Australian Open since 2021. In the second round, he will face the winner of the match between 12th seed Tommy Paul of the USA and Australian wildcard Christopher O’Connell.
Meanwhile, two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka will begin her campaign on January 13th against Caroline Garcia of France in the first round of the women’s singles.
