American Skier Lauren Macuga Claims First World Cup Victory in St. Anton
In a stunning upset, 22-year-old American skier Lauren Macuga dominated the women’s Super-G race at the FIS Alpine ski World Cup in St. Anton, Austria, securing her maiden World cup victory. Macuga finished a remarkable 0.68 seconds ahead of Austria’s Stephanie Venier, who took second place.Italy’s Federica Brignone, the winner of Saturday’s downhill race, rounded out the podium in third, 0.92 seconds behind Macuga.
Adding to the excitement, 40-year-old Lindsey Vonn continued her notable comeback, finishing in fourth place, just 1.24 seconds off the pace.This victory marks a notable breakthrough for Macuga, who had previously achieved a career-best fourth-place finish in a December downhill race in Beaver Creek. On Sunday, she showcased an aggressive and precise skiing style on the challenging Karl Schranz course, expertly navigating key sections and avoiding costly errors that plagued her competitors.
“I can’t believe it. I’m ecstatic. It still feels surreal, like a dream come true,” Macuga exclaimed in a post-race interview with FIS TV. “I’ve always dreamed of this moment. After my performances in the last two Super-G races, I knew I had the potential to reach the podium.I focused on skiing cleanly, knowing I was capable of it. I hoped it would all come together today, and it did!”
Meanwhile, Italian favorite Sofia Goggia, who also crashed out of Saturday’s downhill race, suffered another setback, failing to finish the Super-G due to a risky line.
Brignone’s third-place finish propelled her to the top of the overall World Cup standings, where she now holds a 23-point lead over Croatia’s Zrinka Ljutić. In the Super-G discipline standings, Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami, the reigning World Cup champion in both Super-G and maintains her lead despite finishing fifth in saturday’s downhill.

Lindsey Vonn: Thanks for having me! It’s always a pleasure to talk skiing.
You’ve witnessed a lot of incredible moments in your career, lindsey. What are your thoughts on Lauren Macuga’s stunning victory in St. Anton?
Lindsey Vonn: I’m so happy for Lauren! She’s been steadily climbing the ranks and it’s clear she’s got the talent and the drive to win. This victory is truly a testament to her hard work and dedication.
A 0.68 second margin of victory is quite substantial in Super-G. What stood out to you about Macuga’s performance?
Lindsey Vonn: Lauren’s skiing was aggressive and precise. On that challenging Karl Schranz course, you have to be both brave and calculated, and she seemed to have the perfect balance. Avoiding costly errors on a course like that is crucial and she clearly executed her plan flawlessly.
Some people are calling this a breakout moment for Macuga. Do you see her as a future force to be reckoned with in women’s skiing?
Lindsey Vonn: Absolutely! This win should give Lauren a huge confidence boost. She’s shown she can perform on the biggest stage and I think we’ll see her challenging for more podiums and victories in the future.
Let’s talk about your own performance,Lindsey. Fourth place is a fantastic result considering your comeback journey. How are you feeling physically and mentally after the race?
Lindsey Vonn: I’m feeling good overall. There’s always room for advancement, but finishing in the top 5 against such fierce competition is a positive sign.My body feels strong and my confidence is growing with every race.
Do you think you can challenge for the overall World Cup title this season?
Lindsey Vonn: (laughs) It’s a long season and anything can happen. Right now, I’m focused on taking it one race at a time, working on my technique, and getting back to the level I know I’m capable of.
It was fascinating to see Federica Brignone take the overall World Cup lead with her podium finish. What are your thoughts on her strong start to the season?
Lindsey Vonn:
Federica is a phenomenal skier.She’s consistently been among the best in the world and it’s no surprise to see her leading the standings.She’s adaptable and always seems to ski intelligently, which makes her a tough competitor.
what advice would you give to young skiers who aspire to follow in your and Lauren macuga’s footsteps?
Lindsey Vonn: Believe in yourself, work hard, and never give up on your dreams. Skiing is a challenging sport, but the rewards are immense. Surround yourself with a good team and enjoy the journey!
