Dalin Dominates Vendée Globe, Setting a New Record
French sailor Charlie Dalin has etched his name in history, securing victory in the grueling Solo round the World Tour, also known as the Vendée Globe. His remarkable feat was achieved in a record-breaking time of 64 days, 19 hours, 22 minutes, and 49 seconds, shattering the previous best set by Armel le Cléac’h in 2016 by over nine days.Dalin’s triumphant return to the port of Les Sables-d´Olonne on the french Atlantic coast aboard his vessel, Macif Santé Prévoyance, was met with jubilation. He had dominated the race from December 30th onwards, leading for an extraordinary 42 days – the longest period any competitor has held the top spot in Vendée Globe history.
“I’m incredibly happy with this result,” Dalin exclaimed to the press, his voice brimming with emotion even before disembarking. “It’s a truly unique achievement.” He described the race as an incredibly intense experience, likening it to a 48-hour sprint due to its relentless pace and demanding nature.
Dalin praised the resilience of his boat, stating that despite encountering minor issues, it remained in excellent condition. He attributed this success to the exceptional work of his team, whom he considers the best in the world.
This victory marks Dalin’s second consecutive triumph in the Solo Round the World Tour, a feat that places him alongside sailing legend Michel Desjoyeaux, who also achieved two victories, though not in consecutive editions. Dalin expressed his pride in sharing this accomplishment with Desjoyeaux.
As Dalin celebrated his historic win, all eyes turned to the approaching finish line, where Yoann Richomme on Paprec Arkea was poised to claim second place, followed closely by Sébastien Simon aboard Groupe Dubreuil.

Michel Desjoyeaux: Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss this extraordinary race.
We couldn’t help but celebrate Charlie Dalin’s amazing victory. What are yoru thoughts on his performance, especially breaking the record by such a meaningful margin?
MD: Charlie’s performance was nothing short of stunning. Setting a new record in the Vendée Globe is a monumental achievement, and to do it by over nine days is a testament to his skill, determination, and the incredible work of his team. He sailed an intelligent race, kept his boat in top condition, and demonstrated remarkable mental fortitude.
He dominated for an unprecedented 42 days, a truly remarkable feat. What challenges do you think were most crucial to overcome to maintain that lead for such an extended period?
MD: The Vendée Globe is as much a mental battle as a physical one. Maintaining focus and concentration for weeks on end while facing the relentless demands of the Southern Ocean is incredibly challenging. Dealing with fatigue, making tactical decisions under pressure, and battling loneliness are all part of the game.
Charlie managed to keep his cool and make smart decisions throughout the majority of the race. That’s a crucial factor in achieving such sustained dominance.
You’ve experienced the highs and lows of the Vendée Globe yourself. What advice would you give to aspiring solo sailors hoping to one day achieve similar success?
MD: It takes years of preparation and dedication to even be competitive in this race. Building a strong team, understanding the boat inside and out, and developing mental resilience are all essential.
But beyond the technical aspects, it’s about believing in yourself and having the tenacity to push through the tough moments. The Vendée Globe will test you like nothing else, but the rewards, both personal and professional, are immeasurable.

MD: Defending the title will be a tough challenge for Charlie, but I have no doubt he’ll be ready. The Vendée Globe is constantly evolving, and we’re seeing younger sailors pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. I believe the future of this race is in great hands.
Thank you for your time and insights, Michel. It’s been a pleasure talking with you.
MD: The pleasure was all mine. Fair winds and following seas!**
