Elsa Jacob,the reigning French national champion in mixed doubles,has been selected to represent France at the european Mixed Team Championships in Baku,Azerbaijan,from February 12th to 16th. [[2]] This prestigious event will see Jacob team up with notable players, including the Popov brothers.
Meanwhile, the Popov brothers, Toma Junior and Christo, are making waves in the singles category at the Super 750 tournament in New Delhi, India. Both have advanced past the first round,boosting their rankings in the men’s singles world standings.
Toma Junior Popov secured his spot in the round of 16 with a hard-fought three-set victory over Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto (20-22, 21-10, 21-14). He was soon joined by his brother Christo, who triumphed over China’s Lei lan Xi (ranked 22nd in the world) in straight sets (21-15, 21-18). Christo’s win came after a series of three consecutive losses against his younger brother, demonstrating his resilience and determination. He will now face the winner of the match between Lin (Taipei) and Sen (India),both of whom trained with the Popov team in Fos earlier this year in preparation for the Olympic Games.
Toma Junior, along with Alex Lanier, finds himself in the upper half of the draw. Lanier recently defeated Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the world number four. toma Junior will face a formidable opponent in Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu, the world number 16, who recently upset Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen in Malaysia.
