Alto Hospicio’s Archery Club Aims for National Glory in 2025
The Saetas del Desierto Archery Club in Alto Hospicio is gearing up for a promising year, fueled by the unwavering support of the local municipality and a roster of dedicated athletes. Mayor Patricio Ferreira recently presented the club and the Municipal Sports and Training School wiht new sporting equipment, reaffirming the city’s commitment to fostering archery talent.This commitment is evident in the club’s notable track record. Alto Hospicio has produced numerous national and international champions in youth and junior categories, showcasing the effectiveness of the city’s investment in archery development. Mayor Ferreira emphasized the municipality’s dedication to continuing this trend through the implementation of programs and competitions designed to promote the sport.
Paola Díaz,President of Saetas del Desierto,and Coach Bianca Villalobos expressed their gratitude for the municipality’s support,particularly the provision of new arrows,which are essential for the athletes’ training and progress.They also commended Mayor Ferreira for his attentiveness to the club’s needs and his proactive approach to problem-solving.
The club is already setting its sights on a busy 2025 calendar. Their first regional tournament kicks off on January 25th, followed by a second regional championship planned for February 8th, with the support of the municipality.
Beyond regional competitions,Saetas del Desierto will also participate in the Arica Open on February 25th and the prestigious South American Championship in Santiago in March. A talented team, including Aixa Catalán, Sady Galaz, Lorenzo cornejo, Vicente Reyes, Víctor Novoa, and Matías Roa, will represent Alto Hospicio at the South American Championship, accompanied by Coach Carlos Olivares and Coach Bianca Villalobos. The team is determined to make their city proud on the national stage.

A Conversation with Archery Champion and Coach, Ricardo Morales

From what I’ve heard,they’ve got a great mix of young talent and experienced athletes,and the support from the municipality is commendable. Providing equipment and investing in programs really shows a commitment to nurturing archery talent.
Host: Absolutely. The article states they have a long history of success, producing national and international champions. Do you think this firm foundation will propel them to further success in upcoming tournaments like the south American Championship in Santiago?
Ricardo: I definitely think their past successes are a great indicator of their potential. It takes dedication, coaching expertise, and a strong team spirit to reach that level of competition.The South American Championship is a major event, but with the right mindset and preparedness, Saetas del Desierto could definitely make their mark.

Ricardo: I think it’s absolutely crucial.Archery is a sport for everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability. Saetas del Desierto is showcasing that beautifully. By fostering a truly inclusive environment, they’re not only providing opportunities for all but also broadening the appeal of the sport. This kind of portrayal can inspire a new generation of archers.
Host: Couldn’t agree more. Now, let’s talk about the athletes themselves. The South American Championship team boasts a talented roster, including Aixa Catalán, Sady Galaz, Lorenzo Cornejo, Vicente Reyes, Víctor Novoa, and Matías Roa. Any predictions on who might emerge as a standout performer?
Ricardo: It’s tough to say for certain! Each of these athletes has proven themselves. Aixa Catalán,for example,has shown unbelievable consistency in recent months. But in a high-pressure environment like the South American Championships, anything can happen. It’s all about who handles pressure best on the day.

Ricardo: I think focus, discipline, and mental fortitude are absolutely essential for archery. Hitting that bullseye consistently doesn’t just rely on physical prowess; it demands mental control and the ability to block out distractions.
But these aren’t just useful on the range – they’re valuable life skills. Learning to focus your attention, persevere through challenges, and maintain composure under pressure can benefit anyone, regardless of their pursuits.
