A Legacy on the Pitch: Slaven Football Club’s Enduring History
slaven Football Club, Živinica’s oldest sporting institution, is poised to celebrate a remarkable milestone next year: nine decades since its inception. Throughout its illustrious history, Slaven has nurtured extraordinary talent, boasting players who have donned the jerseys of the SFRI and BiH national teams, as well as prominent clubs across Europe. One such luminary, Živković, even reached the pinnacle of European club football, featuring in the UEFA Champions League final with Bayer Leverkusen.
A glimpse into slaven’s past is captured in a photograph from September 1965, showcasing the team during a match against Partizan from Pofalić near Sarajevo. among the players pictured is Franjo-Mišo-tadić, the team’s goalkeeper, who vividly recalls that era.
“The specific league we competed in during 1965 escapes my memory,” Tadić reminisces, “but our encounter with the Pofalić team was limited to that single season. Slaven was experiencing a period of great success. A year or two later, we secured promotion to the Republic League of Bosnia and Herzegovina. our triumph earned us a coveted spot in the final for entry into the Second League of the SFRY, where we faced Rudar Ljubljana. Unfortunately, just before the crucial match, our star player Pirić transferred to Zagreb’s dinamo. This critically important loss weakened our squad, preventing us from progressing further.”
Tadić continues, highlighting the paths taken by some of his teammates: “From that memorable team, Fuad Subašić went on to play for Tuzla’s Sloboda, while Hidajet Tulumović joined FK Sarajevo. Sadly, Tulumović suffered a career-altering injury during a match against Dinamo Zagreb. Salih Delalić also found his way to FK Sarajevo.”
Expressing his disappointment at Slaven’s current standing, Tadić laments, “It’s disheartening to see slaven competing in the second division of the TK league, especially when considering the presence of several stronger teams from the Živinica area, such as Slatina and Rijeka, who are playing in higher leagues.”
Looking ahead, Tadić extends his best wishes to Slaven’s new management: “I sincerely hope they can guide Slaven back to its rightful place in the FBiH First League. With its rich history and the city’s current growth, slaven deserves a spot among the elite.”
