DREAM ASIA CUP: A Platform for inclusion adn Empowerment
Osaka is set to host a groundbreaking event from January 14th to 18th: the DREAM ASIA CUP, the inaugural Asian tournament dedicated to social football. This unique sport provides individuals with mental disabilities an opportunity to experience the joy and camaraderie of soccer.
The Japan Social Football Association, established in 2013, is the driving force behind this initiative.Guided by the principle of fostering a society where connections are forged and differences are respected through the power of sport, the association has already organized four national tournaments and one regional championship within Japan. Their reach extends beyond national borders, with the first international tournament held in Osaka in 2016, followed by participation in a second international tournament in Italy in 2018.
The impact of the association’s work is undeniable. To date, over 2,000 individuals have participated across approximately 160 teams, demonstrating the growing enthusiasm for social football. Furthermore, the Japan Disabled Football Federation (JIFF), established in 2015, collaborates with six other soccer organizations dedicated to individuals with various disabilities. Together, they strive to create a more inclusive society through the unifying power of the gorgeous game.Staging the DREAM ASIA CUP comes with a significant financial commitment of 18 million yen. However, the organizers believe the investment is crucial. This tournament offers athletes a platform to unite, compete, and strive for victory. More importantly,it provides a much-needed stage for athletes with mental disabilities who often face social isolation. By showcasing their talent and determination, the DREAM ASIA CUP aims to challenge perceptions and promote understanding. To ensure the success of this momentous event, the organizers have launched a crowdfunding campaign running from December 28, 2024, to February 28, 2025. This initiative allows individuals and organizations to contribute directly to the tournament’s realization, empowering athletes and fostering a more inclusive sporting landscape in Asia.
