Liepāja Judo Team Prepares for Championship Season
The Liepāja Complex Sports School’s judo team recently concluded a rigorous training camp in Riga, hosted by the Latvian Judo Federation.Led by coach Vladimirs Ševkovs, the ten athletes participated in intensive sessions designed to sharpen their skills and prepare them for the upcoming season.
According to Simona Laiveniece, press representative for the Liepāja complex Sports School, the camp serves as a crucial stepping stone towards the Latvian and Baltic championships.
Coach Ševkovs highlighted the camp’s benefits, stating, “Our athletes gained valuable experience. Some made strategic shifts in weight categories, while others refined their techniques. Sparring with familiar opponents allowed us to assess our strengths and weaknesses.” He added, “Observing the performance of other competitors provided insights into potential rivals we need to focus on.”
The team’s first test of the year will be the Baltic Judo Championship, scheduled for January 25th in Riga. This prestigious event will feature judokas from the U18 and U21 age groups, setting the stage for an exciting start to the competitive season.

Coach Ševkovs: Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss judo and the progress of our young athletes.
Moderator: Your team recently wrapped up an intensive training camp in Riga, hosted by the latvian Judo Federation.Can you tell us a bit about the camp’s focus and its meaning in preparing for the upcoming season?
Coach Ševkovs: Absolutely. This camp is a crucial stepping stone for our athletes as it provides a focused habitat to refine their skills and tactics. We had intensive sparring sessions, tactical workshops, and the possibility to observe other competitors. It allows us to assess where our athletes stand, identify areas for advancement, and strategize for the upcoming Latvian and Baltic championships.
Moderator: You mentioned strategic shifts in weight categories. Is that a common occurrence in judo, and what factors are considered when making those decisions?
Coach Ševkovs: Yes, it is.Athletes constantly evolve physically, and their competitive weight class might need adjusting. We carefully consider factors like the athlete’s growth spurt, their natural build, and their performance against opponents in different weight categories.
Moderator:Sparring against familiar opponents can be both beneficial and challenging. How do you approach these sessions to maximize the team’s gains?
Coach Ševkovs: We view these sparring sessions as opportunities for both individual and team growth. It allows athletes to put their training into practice, experiment with new techniques, and reinforce existing ones. We analyse the sparring sessions together, identifying both strengths and weaknesses, and use that information to fine-tune their strategies.
Moderator: The first major test of the season, the Baltic Judo Championship, is just around the corner. What are your expectations for the team,given the diligent preparation?
Coach Ševkovs: We are confident in our athletes’ abilities. They have put in the hard work,and the recent camp provided them with invaluable experience. Our focus is on them showcasing their skills, competing with determination, and, most importantly, enjoying the process. We believe in their potential and will be supporting them every step of the way.
Moderator: Coach Ševkovs, what would you say to aspiring young judokas who are considering taking up the sport?
coach Ševkovs: Judo is a fantastic sport that teaches discipline, respect, and resilience. It’s a physically and mentally demanding sport, but the rewards are immense. If you’re looking for a sport that challenges you to be your best, both on and off the mat, then judo is for you.
