This is a challenging period for one of the standout players of the Colombian Women’s National Team, as she faces a significant setback in her career.
Manuela Vanegas,a key figure in the team, has been dealt a devastating blow after enduring a season riddled with injuries and health concerns.
A Major Blow for colombia
The starting right-back suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee during a match against Barcelona on January 5, as confirmed by her club, Real Sociedad of Spain. The injury occurred during a high-stakes game, leaving her sidelined for an extended period.
“Manuela Vanegas sustained an ACL tear in her right knee during the match against FC Barcelona on January 5. Following thorough diagnostic tests and consultations with medical experts, she is scheduled for surgery in the coming weeks. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Javier Albillos at Policlínica Gipuzkoa,” the club stated in an official declaration.
This injury is a significant loss for both her club and the national team. Vanegas, who had an impressive season with 11 starts and 3 goals, will miss critical tournaments, including the She Believes Cup (February 20-26) and the Copa América (July 12-August 2). Her absence leaves a void in Colombia’s defensive lineup.
Career at a Crossroads
The timing of this injury couldn’t be worse for Vanegas, as it not only impacts her role with the national team but also casts uncertainty over her professional future.
With only six months remaining on her contract, negotiations for a renewal had stalled. Real Sociedad’s coach, José Luis Sánchez, emphasized the club’s stance, stating, “We will renew contracts as we see fit, but the club’s interests will always come before any individual player.”
This uncertainty has fueled speculation about her next move, including rumors of a potential transfer to Real Madrid, especially following Linda Caicedo’s recent signing. However, Vanegas’s injury has left her career in limbo, with her future now hanging in the balance.
