KOMPAS.com - Ahead of his debut, Persib Bandung’s latest signing, Gervane Kastaneer, has been the subject of widespread discussion due to his history of partial blindness in his right eye.
This revelation came to light through a post by the Curacao Football News account on social media platform X, which stated that Kastaneer’s right eye had experienced 70 percent vision loss.
The incident dates back to 2017 when Kastaneer was playing for ADO Den Haag in the Dutch League. He underwent eye surgery on January 23, 2017, to address the issue.
“Kastaneer disclosed in an interview three years ago that he has 70 percent blindness in his right eye,” the account mentioned.

Dr. Wira Prasetya,Persib’s team doctor,clarified that the Curacao international sustained the eye injury six years ago.
“It’s been a long time as the injury occurred. There’s nothing to worry about now. It doesn’t impact his performance in any way. The issue dates back six years,” Wira explained.
According to multiple sources,Kastaneer required a recovery period of 106 days following the injury. Fortunately, his vision returned to normal after the surgery.
Post-recovery,Kastaneer continued his football career,playing for several European clubs,including Kaiserslautern (Germany),NAC Breda (Netherlands),Coventry City FC (England),Heart of Midlothian FC (Scotland),PEC Zwolle (Netherlands),and CD Castellon (Spain). He has now joined persib Bandung.

Dr.Wira also shared that Kastaneer’s recent medical examinations yielded positive results, with no issues detected in his muscles, bones, or joints.
“Gervane underwent a medical check-up yesterday, and the results were excellent. His muscles, bones, and joints are in good condition, and his medical records are clear,” Wira added.
kastaneer’s most recent injury occurred on August 10, 2022, when he suffered a hamstring strain, sidelining him for about 30 days.
