An Interview with Former Spanish Basketball Player Amaya Valdemoro
Moderator: welcome,Amaya! It’s an honour to have you here today to discuss the Basque Basketball Federation’s groundbreaking Women’s Referee Mentor Program. As someone who has been a trailblazer in Spanish basketball, how do you view initiatives like this in the current sports landscape?
Amaya Valdemoro: Thank you for having me! I think it’s a fantastic initiative. Sports, especially basketball, have come a long way in terms of gender equality, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. Programs like this not only empower women but also elevate the standard of refereeing across the board.
Moderator: Absolutely. The program features prominent figures like Susana Gómez, Yasmina Alcaraz, and Esperanza mendoza. How meaningful is it to have such experienced mentors leading these sessions?
Amaya Valdemoro: It’s crucial. Susana,Yasmina, and Esperanza are legends in their field. Their experiences and insights are invaluable. For young referees, especially women, having role models who’ve faced similar challenges and succeeded can be incredibly motivating. It shows them that it’s possible to reach the top.
moderator: That’s a great point. Do you think this program will encourage more women to take up refereeing?
Amaya Valdemoro: Definitely. Refereeing has traditionally been a male-dominated area, but initiatives like this break down barriers.By providing mentorship and guidance, the program makes it easier for women to step into these roles and feel supported.
Moderator: The program is part of the Basque Basketball Federation’s Equality Plan. Do you believe other federations should follow suit?
Amaya Valdemoro: Absolutely. Equality in sports isn’t just about players; it’s about everyone involved—referees, coaches, administrators. Federations across Spain and beyond should take note and implement similar programs. Equality isn’t a checkbox; it’s a continuous effort.
moderator: Well said. The program’s opening ceremony will be presided over by Alicia Gómez Legorburu, the Vice President of the Basque Basketball Federation. How significant is her involvement?
Amaya Valdemoro: Alicia’s presence is symbolic. It shows that the federation’s leadership is committed to this cause. When people in positions of power actively support initiatives like this,it sends a strong message to the entire community.
moderator: The sessions are virtual, which makes them accessible to a wider audience. Do you think virtual mentorship can be as effective as in-person guidance?
Amaya Valdemoro: Virtual programs have their advantages—they’re more accessible and flexible. Though, I think a mix of virtual and in-person sessions would be ideal.Face-to-face interaction can’t be completely replaced, especially in sports where practical experience is key.
Moderator: That’s a fair point. For our readers, what advice would you give to aspiring referees who are considering joining this program?
