NBA, the union agrees on 29 social justice messages approved for shirts

Options for NBA social justice messages are set.

Players will have a list of 29 claims to choose from to put on the back of their shirts instead of their names for the first four days of the league’s resumption in Orlando, according to ESPN’s The Undefeated on Friday.

The list, as agreed by the league and the NBA Players Association, includes these messages: Black Lives Matter; Say their names; Vote; I can not breathe; Justice; Peace; Equality; Freedom; Enough; Power to the people; Justice Now; Say his name; Yes Se Puede (Yes, we can); Liberation; See you; Hear; respect us; You love us; Listen; Hear; Standing; Ally; Anti-racist; I’m a man; Speak; How many more; Group economy; Education reform; and mentor.

Although players are not required to have a message on their shirts, according to the report, those who choose to do so can still keep it after the first four days, but their surnames will be added below.

The Undefeated previously reported that players would not use the names of men and women who died in police custody or racially motivated incidents, in order not to offend the families of a victim whose name is not been used.

Players reportedly held meetings to discuss how best to use their platforms to address systemic racism and police brutality in the wake of the death of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, among others. Mesh messages are just one of the ways they plan to do it, according to reports.
